미국 오하이오 주립대학교에서 박사학위를 받았다. 자연적 교란이 생태계의 구조와 기능에 미치는 영향을 연구해왔다. 유네스코의 국제보호지역을 통한 자연보전에 참여해왔다. 2021년부터 3년간 국립생태원 원장을 역임하였다. 현재 유네스코 MAB프로그램의 국제조정이사회 부의장과 유네스코 MAB한국위원회 위원장으로 활동하고 있다.  

I received my Ph.D. degreee from the Ohio State University. I have studied the effects of natural disturbances on the structure and function of forest ecosystems. I have participated in the nature conservation through the international protected areas of UNESCO. I worked as the president of the National Institute of Ecology for 3 years since 2021. Currently I am working as vice-chair of the ICC (International Coordinating Council) of UNESCO MAB (Man and Biosphere Program) and chair of MAB National Committee of Republic of Korea.
